So. Has anyone else on my teeny tiny flist here, in blind loyalty and support of the franchise, bought the SPN novel, Nevermore? And, like, actually read it?
I'd call it pretty mediocre fanfic, honestly. There were a couple of two-sentence gems in there, and a scattered section or two where the classic Sam-and-Dean made an appearance, but if it wasn't for my absolute desperate desire to support SPN in any way possible, I'd have happily given it a pass. It was slow, could use some heavy editing, and pretty predictable.
But, Sam and Dean, so case closed.
What they should do is pay me to write a book, that's what. Or like, any of the bajilllion fantastic writers in fandom.
If I had the cash to blindly support the franchise, I'd go out and buy it; but since you are the third hardcore SPN fan I know to not give the book a good review, I'll wait for it to show up at the library to check it out. Besides, I still need to get the S1 box.
Mediocre is the word I'm stickin' with. Lots of POV jumps, which I generally don't go for because that sometimes makes it too easy to explain away the good stuff, and I think it really could've been pared down quite a bit.
A few good scenes, though, and a moment or two when the author really managed to get inside Sam or Dean's head, but nothing really consistent. It didn't really grab me in the way good novels or fanfic do, where you just can't stop reading. So, mediocre.
Hey, remember the story Chicagoland that you liked so much? The author wrote another rps that's very reminiscent: Manny and the Beast (http://phaballa.livejournal.com/320785.html). Same characterizations, but the roles switched up.
So, not so good, huh? *reads comments* But it's Sam and Dean! (In other words, who the F cares if it's good?) I also bought the Dark Angel book, nerd I am. Wasn't so good writing either. You can only read the phrase "... her bee-stung lips..." so many times and not even the first time it's terribly "descriptive" or "erotic".
What about this "Official Companion to Season 1" - have you heard anything what that's about? I know it's not out yet, but... maybe you have geeky insider knowledge?
Maybe we should just write a fan novel - just like another episode or a movie script, without what we actually want in there, but what would be canon... and then show them what we do for fun, and how they losed out by paying someone to do such a pale immitation of our fannish skillz. XP
Aha, where would I get geeky insider knowledge? Okay, the geeky I'll give you, but insider, oh, I wish.
All I know is it's supposed to be out in September, sometime around the release of S2 on DVD. Which I am EAGERLY AWAITING LIKE AN EAGERLY AWAITING THING AWAITS.
I think me and Pond might actually be considering something like this. Maybe. *shifty* Sorta.
Oh, oh, oh. Someone posted something about how they got the S2 on DVD at Walmart and how she's only watched the extras so far and that she made geeky love all over an lj post, describing how the gag reel is almost twice as long as the first one. Looooove! XD
Considering, ah? *snugsnug* >:3 If you need some nudging or anything else, I can rub against your leg a little bit... or dunno, love all over you. ^_~
meant to say, not talking about nevermore. looked it over, put it back on the shelf.
much rather be reading your stuff. and yeah, i'd buy it if you were selling. honestly! how in the world do you get inside the mind of sam and dean like that? it's unholy, and lovely all at the same time.
So, I set you up as a feed for my lj. And I thought you'd be amused to know that in checking to see if it worked, I discovered that feeds don't LJ cut, and I finally got an eyeful of SPN porn. yar.
Well. If it's any consolation, they weren't actually having sex. Sam was just jerking off because he's an over-repressed, undersexed piece of hotness and he SHOULD be jerking off more.
ok, after i read all the comments here i felt like a pure-dee bitch for writing nevermore off so quickly so i went out and bought it guilty-quick and read it this weekend. i don't mind dropping bucks that might get back to cw to help keep them convinced it's a good thing to keep the show on the air.
but i actually am a writer in mundane life, and i now feel quaiified to say it's a piece of crap, and the purchase is definitely a charity thing. there are loads of factual errors in the book, and the guy can't even remember if sam's arm or wrist or hand is broken, 'cause every time he mentions sam's wearing a cast, he changes his mind. plus he made the whole story come off pretty much like "one-tree-hill-with-monsters." you guys & those still at lj write much better stuff.
i can't actually remember which episode it was where sam broke his wrist as i've only watched the Season 1 DVDs about 5 times each and the re-runs of Season 2 that aired this summer, being a relative newcomer. But I'm relatively sure it wasn't a zombie bitch in Lawrence ---was it? that broke his --and i'm pretty sure it was --*wrist.*
but correct me, please.
i do have an editorial connection at harper collins, the publisher, and if there is any feedback you think as a group we ought to make to encourage BETTER fiction to be written about this wonderful show, please let me know. i am excited there will be a series, but god. according to his bio, this is the same guy writing the star wars and buffy drivel & he is at lj but not in most of the communities as far as i can tell. no wonder it's so godawful. it's like he watched 3 or 4 shows at most.
ok, i'm off. feel free to call me on any of this, i'm still learning myself. just wanted to know if anyone was seriously interested in me getting in touch with my editor-friend at h/c and letting her know what fandom at large thinks & would rather see, so she can feed it to whomever on her side of the desk.
Ok, so this is waaaayyy late, but I just happened across this. In response to your question--yes, I did buy it in blind loyalty and support. In fact, I pre-orderd it. yeah. and its sitting in the drawer of my computer desk right now, where it has been since it arrived at my house...unread...

Plus, I got my employee discount on it as well, so it didn't kill my pocket too hard.:D
fanfic
