Time for a Stupid American Question: Are they like real police or more ceremonial? I tend to think of them like the Buckingham Palace guards, which may very well be a serious military regiment but also seem sort of...silly. Of course there's horses involved which makes it better.

XD Aha, no, they're the national police force (I think they still have status as a dragoon regiment though, since military honours are mentioned every so often).

And this is where I confesses that I have only a vague idea of how the police force works in the States, with all the different jurisdictions and everything.

Oh, and the iconic image of the Mountie is based on the dress uniform. Service uniforms are solid navy blue for the most part.
