Regarding your thought about highway vs. autobahn, this is one of the situations where you as a writer could go with a familiar, comfortable metaphor, or you could stretch out and find one that suits your purpose just as well. In this case, the autobahn is in my feeling a better metaphor, since a notion that generally hits people when they think of the autobahn is NO SPEED LIMITS OMG. The fact that Tommy is American-from-America should in no way limit the world of simile and metaphor. :3
